What to expect for an entry level job

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

Looking for the job is not an easy time for any one especially for the fresh graduates, but they need to be realistic about their expectations for an entry-level position. It is usually believed that entry-level candidates have unrealistic career expectations. They must realize that the dream job doesn’t come until you spend a few years, if not many years, into your career.

Fresh job seekers should not consider only salary but should also consider other aspects such as job-growth potential, management responsibilities and opportunities to work on high-profile projects. If they can work on something high-profile, it’s a really good for their portfolio. Obviously compensation matters a lot in a decision, but a lot of fresh candidates will leave the job unless taking a view of other benefits and compensations.

In this way one thing the entry level candidate can do is to list the different jobs, related to your field and examine the average salaries.

The candidate should also study the company profile so they can ask informed questions when meeting with hiring managers and get a realistic sense about the position.

If you have chances for good and competitive working environment you may start with less compensation just to set your feet in the door and work your way up the career ladder. Take it as a temporary job and build your resume, and gain valuable experience and skills.

Someone else took your promotion? What to do now

Friday, May 27th, 2011

Management didn’t have a clue and made a major mistake by promoting someone else and you have been passed over for a promotion. Now you have only two possible ways, you may trash the company and your manager and start sending out your resume and the other direction is to assess your skills and job performance according to its requirements.

Have a meeting with decision maker and politely ask him the reason of promotion of the other one. On what caused them to select the other candidate. Start with a discussion with your boss. Remember, you are there to gain information, not to argue your case. This is where you need to practice one of the most important skills, which is listening.

Listen to him politely and say thanks in the end and let them know you would like to be a prominent one for the promotion in the next chance. If there is any misperception about you remember this is not the time of challenging the situation. You need to work on the misperceptions that how did it take birth or what were the basic way for that misperception, need is to find out the root.

Consult with mentor in the company. Take their feedback about you and your standing in the organization. Try to know their view about how to approach the opportunity. The honest assessment of you and your mentor will help you to determine if you were really the more qualified candidate and passed over for some other reason. Not only assess your qualification but also try to assess all the issues such as you need to develop your skill in a particular area that was holding you back. Perhaps your talents are better suited for another position. There can be a personality clash between you and other one.   No matter what you assume, you might be surprised to learn the reasons. You need to know the actual reason, once you know the reasons you were passed over you can inquire about what you need to do to increase your chances of being promoted in the future or you may search for some other opportunity.

Now this is the time of objective. Feel is it really something that has been damaging your long-term career goals? Do you have a secure future in the organization? What are the alternatives to achieve your career goals?

If you are not satisfied with all and were really a deserving one for the promotion then you may have many other opportunities in different companies but never send your resume with your company email or use any phone of the company, this can be the reason of your job termination. While applying for another job try to be professional in your present job as it is still your duty.

On the other way if you feel that you were not suitable person for the promotion then this is the time to know what were your shortcomings and drawbacks. This is the time for extra hard work to exceed in every project. Do volunteer work in the projects and assignments. The more diligence and hard work you will show the more will be the opportunities to grow.
