Avoid giving these answers during the interview

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

It is but natural to feel relaxed and nervous at the same time, when you are called in for the interview. An interview is the major land mark in getting a job, but instead of feeling terrible the best thing is to get ready for the interview. You can try and guess the questions and prepare their answers before hand. Doing a little bit research about the company will help in this aspect.

No matter what a little tension is understandable, but to ease it a little we have stated four most common questions and there answers for your help;

1. Just, simply tell me what you think about yourself.

If you are asked this question, don’t become too overconfident and start blabbering about yourself. Prepare before hand and try to practice out loud. You should focus on the nature of the job and answer accordingly and narrate those about your self which you think are relevant for this job. Don’t give too much information about yourself as this will confuse both of you.

2. What are the motives for leaving your current job?

It is a very tricky question as whatever you say can be taken against you. Try giving a very specific answer because if you give the impression of being over ambitious then they won’t give you the job. Just simply narrate the facts such as the company was changing management and you got afraid of losing your job. In this manner you can give more than one reason to reinforce your current scenario.

3. Narrate your biggest strengths and weaknesses?

Never say that you are a perfectionist. Just simply narrate the strength which you think will help you get the job. While narrating a weakness specify the one that is very realistic and not related to the job.
4. What are your expectations about the salary?

It is better to avoid this conversation till you feel that you are about to be hired. Try to accept the salary they offer and discuss with them about the increments, how much and at what time. After discussing these things you will form a better picture about your future and the prospects about the job.

Communication skills | A successful interview

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

Prepare for the interview

It does not matter if you can speak English and you are a very good speaker. What matters is that how you present yourself in front of an interviewer and how good you are in making a right impression. Even if you do not get a job, your intention should be to give your best!

Before you apply for a job, a little research is better. Always check the name of company and operations on its website. Match their job description with your skills and see how you can contribute to their organization. List down their requirements and then start making points according to your career skills. This will help you in making good answers when you will be interviewed. You don’t know what questions will be asked but try to prepare a few common interview questions.

Secret of good communication

If you can read minds and you can judge opinion of other people then you know the secret. You should have an ability to develop yourself what others want from you. Do not change yourself but present yourself as they want you to be. The best bet is to make an eye contact with the person you are talking to. Not only your dressing sense but your facial expressions and gestures are also being tested while taking an interview. Be confident that you can do it but also show that you still want to learn. You have skills and experience but you are still interested in a better opportunity.

Be a good listener

Listening is the major part of communication skills and if you listen effectively then you can understand better. Never forget that listening can help you understand what a hiring manager is looking for. If you pick up on details, you can use the same details to highlight your area of expertise according to their requirements. Make sure, you are not thinking about the next question of an interviewer. Let the interviewer complete his question, and then you should speak.

Two-way communication is the only way

Do not interrupt the conversation. However, you should be asking probing questions at a decent space in this conversation. It’s better if you do not wait for the interviewer to ask, “Do you have any questions?” but try to maintain a balance. It should look like a two way communication. Do not give long and irrelevant details in your answers. If the question is asked about your I.T skills then reply only with the relevant knowledge and experience. Remember! As more you speak, more is the chance of making mistakes so try to be concise.

How you are the best pick

Discuss what changes you can bring in an organization. How you are the best pick for their organization? Mention what you know about their company and then try to give a reference that you can further develop or improve their ideas. If you are an expert in your field then try to give a suggestion or a creative idea. However, it is recommended to share ideas if you are not sure about them.

Offering Thanksis influential

According to different surveys, employers like to hear thanks in the end of an interview. This will help your application for further evaluation. Take it like another opportunity to make a difference. You can also write a thank-you note which shows your concern and good writing skill.

Best of Luck!

5 Most Common Telephone Interview Questions

Monday, December 12th, 2011

A phone interview sounds much easy. You don’t have  to panic to choose a dress for interview, move to a company’s office or have to appear in an interview as one-on-one. Instead, you are easy at your home and interviewing on the phone. But it is not as easier as it sounds.

You usually have less time in telephone interview as compared to in-person interview. So it is necessary to focus on questions that will help you to be assessed rapidly. You intend to turn it into a face-to-face interview, so be concise in your answers. As a rule of thumb, your answers should be less than two minutes. If interviewer wants to know something more, he/she is free to ask.

Tell me a little about you is often the first question. Try to assess, interviewer is not interested in your life story; but they want to have basic information about your work history and experience to assess if meeting with you is a good use of time. Your answer should be concise with a short work history with clear words to show how each job and project helped you to get experience for this job, also give an outline about your professional abilities that address your skills and relate to  this job well.

What experience do you have in? Not the second but a common asked question in telephonic interview. Discuss any of your experience and precise skills you have in a good way. Discuss everything you do professionally but its core should be concerned with identification, solution of problems and prevention within your area of liability.

What are your strengths? Incline your answer toward your particular skills and needs of the job, your problem avoidance, solution headset, and your control of the moveable expert skills such as Critical Thinking, Multi-tasking and Communication skills that motivate success in every job.

What are your weaknesses? You can securely and sincerely say that finding time for all new technologies that are needed in your work is your biggest weakness and you take it as a challenge. Then you give an example of how you have made time to expand an in-demand new skill.

How much amount do you expect? If the interviewer asks about your salary expectation, be clear and say, you don’t have sufficient information about job responsibilities and company, to answer at the time. Say like “I have no understanding of the job or post responsibilities, your company or any kind of benefit that could be offered by the company, so I can’t tell my expectation without all information. However, after analysis of other employment sites and talking with colleagues, I would surely expect in the range of 000000-000000.”

The telephone interview usually comes to an end with the question “you have any questions”. So this is time to take the initiative, “yes I want to ask, when we can meet?”

How to handle unusual interview questions

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

For job seekers, interviews are surely the causes of anxiety. In order to get an offer, the interviewee says the best right things and tries to impress the employers because there are a number of applicants for the position.

A bad handshake, a tie that’s too bright, not in contact of eyes, speaking in confusion are minor things that may cause a problem for you.  Is it a positive point or not, that’s a separate discussion. In the competitive market of today, employers want to have the best candidate not only in term of behavior or professional appearance but also in facing the unusual behaviors or questions. That’s why the employer may  ask  unusual questions    during the interview.

It does not mean to say that they are trying to make your life difficult but they only desire to discover the strongest candidate for the position. In order to find the best candidate they don’t stick to the usual questions. You might hear, “How would you describe software or a tree? These types of questions can  confuse   job seekers.

Job seekers constantly want to know: Why did they ask an unusual questions and how to answer such questions.

Interviewer asks such questions because he  wants to see “how you handle the pressure and reason out the answer”. So think about the techniques and different ways that you can use to satisfy the interviewer. You would not be in a habit of doing all these but you have to prove that you are willing to try and you have the power to do it.

Here we are going to tackle that how to handle the impossible interview questions:

We have met many hiring managers to know the answers of such questions and  why they ask such unreasonable question? They  told that even they don’t know the answer of these questions. They just ask such type of questions to observe the problem-solving ability and logic of the candidate. And the candidate who answers the question precisely will be successful to get the goal.

“What is the worst interview question in your opinion or ever asked to you?”  is another unusual question asked by the interviewers. With all these questions they actually want to analyse that how much ability a candidate has to handle the unusual situations or questions. Hiring managers considers this question a good test for the candidate applying for a sales person.

So it is advised to answer the questions to your best. Employers want to know that you have the abilities to face and handle the unusual situation.

Networking is important

Create a network of your colleagues and friends who may help you or may recommend you to another. This is the single important task that will allow you to tell your story to people who have the power to hire you.

Don’t limit your search to larger firms

The times have gone when good opportunities are only offered by larger firms. Nowadays many of the jobs are created by small and medium firms. As a matter of fact, it is easy to get hired by the small companies. Applicants usually don’t apply in small companies that they pay less and provide fewer benefits but not always. Your achievements at a small firm can translate into a better job at a larger company.

This is the most common question that is usually asked in almost all interviews. So it is better to prepare a short statement in your mind. But be careful that it should not feel a rehearsed one. After a short introduction of you, talk about your job and your duties. Give details about your experience.

What is your experience in this field?

Talk about the related experience about the field you are applying for. If you do not have a related experience in the job you have applied for then talk about close experiences that can help you.
What was the reason to resign from the last job?

This will reduce your impression. Be positive and be cool and explain a positive reason like a better opportunity or a chance of growth.

Are satisfied with your work in previous company?

Briefly answer yes and explain that you were paying your duties well. A better answer can be that you were completing your set goals and projects before time so you are more than satisfied.

Always research better about the organization you are going for interview. Find about their products, status in the market, issues and who are the key players? Answer in positive if they ask such type of question like you are eager to work in challenging environment or better opportunity of growth is appealing you.

What are the other jobs you are applying for?

If they ask such questions be honest but avoid talking too much about this. Keep your focus on the job you have applied for.

Why you are interested in this organization?

Think a little about its answer. But be careful your answer must be based upon research. Relate the purpose with your long term goals in your career.

Do you have a reference in this organization?

Be careful about the answer of this question. If you have a reference then be sure that he and his work is well thought.

What is your expected salary?

If you answer it first you may loose this opportunity. Never answer this first in your interview. Rather than answer like it all depends upon the responsibilities or details of job. After this give your range but not fixed one.

What is your strength or why should we hire you?

There can be several answers the only need is to stay positive. You may tell your positive points like your problem-solving skills, ability of work under pressure, ability of work in the tough environment, your ability to focus on projects, your professional skills with high qualification or certification, Your skills to lead a group or your positive attitude towards work.

Are you a team player?

Yes you are. Give numerous numbers of examples about your team work in different situations. Do not show off, be factual.

How long would you like to work with this organization if you are hired?

Never be specific in this answer but handle this like as long as we both feel comfortable in work and duties but you would like to work for a long time.

What is more important for you the money or the job?

Be truthful in this answer that both matters and you cannot choose any one among them. Money is important but job matters a little more.

What discourages you at a job?

It is a difficult question to answer but try to adopt safe areas like responsibilities out of your job area or a non serious behavior of your co workers.

What is your management style?

Don’t label yourself  like progressive or salesman. These labels have several meanings depending upon many responsibilities. Adopt situational style like you may answer that it depends upon the situation instead of single strategy.

How to cope with interview stress

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

Interview is an activity consisting of questions and answers. An interviewer is supposed to ask the questions while the interviewee is supposed to answer his/her interviewer.

Interview generally develops a huge stress in the mind of an interviewee. A huge sense of confusion and anxiety develops within the interviewee whenever he/she is supposed to go for an interview.

However one must not let the stress and pressure prevail upon him/her during the interview at all. The questions asked in an interview are always unpredictable and the selection of right words and right mood add a lot to a successful job interview.

Every interviewee seems to have equal influence of tension over him. But that does mean that pressure should shake the confidence of interviewee. One must be able to develop the right situation and environment around him/her and the interviewer to achieve success in his/her interview.

Achieving success in an interview is not an easy job at all. But, one must be capable enough to satisfy the interviewer with almost all the questions being asked to him. The several few essential steps and procedures must be practiced by interviewee to prevail the stress during his interview:

1. Preparation of the interview:

Preparation for an interview is extremely important. One must be able to analyze the actual essentials required for the job. He/she must be aware whether he/she is suitable for the job or not. The interviewee must be at least somewhat familiar to the entire syllabus and curriculum mentioned in the syllabus for the interview.

2. Confidence:

Confidence is the most essential ingredient for an interview. One must be able to develop the right kind of attitude and mood according to the environment during an interview. This is the confidence which enables an interviewee to pass through every possible situation that might occur during the interview.

3. Be CALM!

An interviewee needs not be hyper at all. One must be able to let himself/herself calm and smooth throughout the interview. This calm feeling helps a great deal to interviewee. This is because through this calm attitude interviewer is able to judge that the interviewee is not the one below his expectations.

Conclusion:

Interview is a stressful job. One must be able to keep a firm control over him/her and keep himself/herself composed throughout the interview. If the above measures are practiced by an interviewee, the INTERVIEW STRESS would not be able to exist at all.

Do good looks matter for career success?

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Good looks matter in every aspect of life – of course,  a good looking person is easily noticed, and is always the centre of attraction. Attractive face also helps you get success in career as there are many fields in which good looks matter a lot especially the ones in which you have to deal with the public. But the question is: do ‘only’ good looks can get you success? The answer is ‘no’!

Good looks are definitely a plus point and if you have a nice face, it can help you get attention quite easily! On the other hand, if you are an average looking male or female, of course you will have to struggle to get noticed! But this is only one side of the picture and good looks without intelligence, good communication skills and professionalism can get you nothing! So, the bottom line is that if you are talented, hardworking and know the tactics of your job — and in addition to all these qualities, you are charming as well; then you can get success easily. It means that good looks are an added quality to get you success but ‘not the compulsory factor’ to excel in your professional life.

It is often said that tall and handsome boys get promotion easily. Likewise, it is also a very common thought that well-groomed and pleasant looking women get pay raise in lesser time. It is not that tall boys and pretty women get increment in salary, bonus and other perks just because of their good looks — a company is always interested in hard working, sincere, loyal and efficient employees. If someone despite being good looking is not good at work, his /her employer would not at all be interested in him/her because a business can be run successfully with great efforts and if a good looking worker is not good at putting his/her efforts in his/her work, he/she is of no use for any company.

Therefore, if you are an average looking male or female, don’t get disheartened because what can get you success in your career is your talent, hard work and professionalism; not your looks. If you are able to prove yourself as an efficient worker in your field, you will definitely be noticed and can become the centre of attraction of people.

Show your professionalism during job interview

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

There are many people, who are not called by any organisation after they give interview even though they possess excellent academic record, charming personality and hardworking nature. Where do they lack? What is missing in them that they do not get success in finding any job? The answer is ‘professional attitude’! Yes, the professional attitude is something that before proving it during work, you have it to show it at the time of interview too.

Interview is the first phase where you must show your employer that you are not only hardworking and talented but ‘professional’ too — a quality many people lack even though being extremely talented in their respective fields.

Professionalism means that you know the norms of your job and are ready to follow them at any cost and that you are committed to your job and are willing to fulfil all your job-related responsibilities despite any or all social restrictions. For example, an air hostess during the interview is asked to assure the employer that she is willing to perform all tasks an air-hostess is supposed to do without any hesitation. If the person to be interviewed replies like “I will try”, “May be”, “I don’t know”, “Depends” — all these words show a casual attitude and lack of professionalism resulting in getting disqualified after the first round of interview.

All those girls and guys out there, avoid all these casual words and casual behaviour during interview — the employer who is going to appoint you for his organisation, who is going to invest his money on your training; wants to see in you the guts, devotion to your profession and a spark in your eyes to give your best to your job. Any thing, any movement that shows your carelessness towards work ethics will get you disqualified immediately. That’s why besides showing your degree and knowledge; also show your maturity and professionalism towards work during interview — it counts a lot!
