How honest should you be in an interview

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

Here we are talking about the interview honesty. Like how much honesty you should have in your interview? Obviously you should be hundred percent honest.   But honesty does not mean that you show all your cards or do not utilize the power of your presentation.  Honesty also does not mean opening your secrets apparent or otherwise.

There would be hardly be a person without some negative career cases, whether it’s being fired up from a previous job, being slightly under-qualified, a poor reference or another case. Whatever the career baggage is for many of the candidates, honestly is an extreme step.  Either the candidate opens each and everything too early that is unnecessary or hides all the things because he’s defensive and he doesn’t want to be honest about. In both the scenarios, it only causes trouble.

An interview isn’t a process where you say everything and scream “Give me the job!”  When you confess something to your interviewer, or on the other hand, hide something, that’s what the message you’re conveying and that is what you’re thinking.    As a result, the interview gets difficult as it otherwise might.

If you have some problem in your employment history in the past, never reveal it out.  You will never be admired, recognized or appreciated for that. But as a matter of fact you will get dropped from consideration. Rather assess the circumstances that caused the problem and assess and ask question to make sure that either that condition is present in the job you are interviewing for or not.  If it is then elegantly refuse for further process.

Being fired, returning to the job market after self employment and being unemployed for several months are just three instances that take candidates unreasonably on the suspicion.

Find the positive.  After being fired what did you learn from?  What positive characteristics do you posses and what are the reasons for your termination?  And incidentally, are you sure that you was terminated because of your fault?   If it is so assess your weak points and if it is not don’t say that out-and-out!  Your wording in your presentation can convey a similar meaning.

Remember that the nastiest thing you can do is to appear in the job interview with focused on your negative points. You should be proud of your skills, experience and character. Also show them off and use them in the interview. Focus on your positive points; you might just slip through with negligible stress placed on the negatives, without being deceptive.

Pakistan Unemployment: Causes and Solutions
Unemployment is a central problem of Pakistan because when unemployment is high, resources are wasted and people’s incomes are depressed; during such periods, economics distress also spills over to affect people’s emotions and family lives. The socio economics system of Pakistan and institutions has failed to provide employment to the increasing labor force. Labor force include all persons who are of ten years and above , and during the period are without work, currently available for work and seeking for work. About 2.4 million persons of labor force were estimated as unemployed in 1999, as construction and transport sectors have an absorbed 11.2 percent, 6.8 and 5.7 percent as compared to 10.5percent, 7.2 and 5.0 percent respectively in 1994-1995.

Major Causes of Unemployment:

  1. Employment in the private sector absolutely stopped because they shifted their capital to other countries because of nationalization of industrial units badly affected the investment industrial sector.
  2. The higher growth rate of population is the major cause of unemployment in Pakistan. The resources of the country are limited because population has exceeded the optimum level.
  3. Karachi is the biggest industrial base of Pakistan, but investors are reluctant to invest there because of unrest and violence.
  4. Our educational system is also responsible for increasing unemployment rate among the educated youth. The attitude of our youth towards the choice of a career is unrealistic and unproductive. Rapid mechanization and computer technology also causing unemployment.
  5. Lack of infrastructure and facilities in the field of energy, telecommunication and transportation also prevent the industrialist from setting up new industries.
  6. Lack of enough industries to employ ever increasing number of graduate in Pakistan
  7. The government is not involving in capital expenditures which create more jobs.
  8. Main issue of unemployment in our country is that when ever a new technology comes as software or hardware then all the people starts studying about that. Then at the end, you will see ten thousand students of a particular field about 5 to 10 job vacancies.
  9. Things are not handled in appropriate manner, as the vacancies are less but job seekers are more than that.
  10. Opportunities are not enough and system of reference is so much indulged in our society that if a company needs employees then workers of that company will provide some resume to them of their relatives and friends so in this way many people don’t get the opportunity to apply for those jobs.

Suggestions:

  1. Economic Revival package should announce by the government for the revival of industries sector, to stimulate production and investment.
  2. Government should try to boost exports through broadening the tax base and lowering tariffs.
  3. Government should announce multiple packages for the development of agriculture sector.
  4. A number of fiscal and monetary measures should take attract industrialists and particularly foreign investment.
  5. Technical training facilities should be provided. In this way unemployed people will get a chance to enhance their skills and become able to earn more reason able income.

But as these days software companies are growing and new companies are starting their business very rapidly so, I hope ratio of unemployment will become low soon.

How To Grow Your Network

Friday, June 6th, 2008

Everyone knows that networking is the most effective way to find a new job, and yet most people feel their network is far too small. I want to share with you the secret of how to grow your network painlessly.

First of all, what is your network? It is simply the relationships you have with people, and when it comes to job hunting, people who are willing to help you. The more people you know who are willing to talk with you about your job search, the faster you’ll find a new job.

Here’s the secret to growing your network: Help other people. Make it your goal to help people you meet naturally during your day. Be intentional. Look for ways to help co-workers, neighbors, people in your professional organization, (What? You don’t belong to a professional organization?), people at conferences and every new person you meet.

The reason this works is the rule of reciprocity, which says that if you help people, they will be favorably inclined to return the favor in the future. By helping others you are making deposits in accounts that you can withdraw later.

What can you offer? Whatever might be helpful, and it doesn’t have to be a big deal. Perhaps you can send them a link to a website, or a copy of a relevant article. Introduce them to someone in your network. If they are in sales, ask them what a good prospect looks like. The important thing is to cultivate a habit of being interested in the needs of others. Once you discover their needs, you are well on the way to finding a way that you can help.

If you find someone who is feeling unsatisfied in their job, suggest they visit take a career assessment. They can be a powerful tools that identify what truly motivates a person. Career assessments can help people move confidently toward a more satisfying job.

If you make it a goal to help one new person each week, you will soon have a network that any executive would envy.

Job Search – Tips and Guidelines

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Today’s job market is a whirlwind of wonderfully skilled and qualified people, resumes and job leads that seem to go on into forever. The job market evolves and changes often, as does the skills required in certain careers; and as people themselves evolve and move to careers that fit their skills, abilities and lifestyle, a job search can sometimes become a full time job in itself! Anyone who has looked for a job has likely run the gamut of job search rituals. From poring over your resume to practicing interview etiquette, sometimes it feels like there’s nothing left to do but offer a prayer to the gods and hope that someone gives you a call!

Resume Re-rewrite

You probably know your resume by heart. You want your resume to be a good showcase of your talents and abilities so each potential employer can see that you are the right person for the job. But then, so does everyone else. What can you truly do during your job search to get your resume on top of the pile- or even onto the right desk? First you need to slip into the shoes of the person who is doing the hiring.

How many resumes do you think this person is seeing for the same position? Lots! So your best bet is to keep your resume and cover letter short and sweet! Too much information could mean you will get passed over simply because there isn’t enough time to read it all!

It’s good that you were captain of your sports team in high school or in charge of office supplies at your last job but the person doing the hiring is wondering what’s in it for them if they hire you. During your job search, study up on the requirements for the position you are applying for and adjust the skills on your resume to fit perfectly with the position. Do not exaggerate your skills. Simply use the skills that are there.

Avoid the Scams

Online job search sites are a blessing and a curse for those in the job search market. Where there is a wealth of information and opportunity available there are also the predators that look to take advantage of numerous hopefuls who are just trying to find employment.

This can involve everything from ‘Work from Home!’ ruses that amount to nothing to actual phishing and identity theft. Avoid ‘cold call emails’ (emails from ‘companies’ that contact you even though you did not send them your resume) that ask you to click on a link taking you to another site and asking for personal information.

Do your own investigation by entering the company’s name into your browser instead and visit their website. Contact the company and if they are still asking for personal information right off the bat- such as your social security number- step away. Predators also will send fake emails that look as though they come from legitimate job search sites asking for credit card information. Legitimate and reputable job search sites such as Monster will never send an email asking for that type of valuable information because they know this is how the scammers work.

Just the Facts: Researching a Potential Employer

It’s been said before and rightly so: knowledge is power. Companies spend lots of time and money on research and development to give them the competitive edge over their competition; and to make your job search a success, you should, too.

The good news is, you don’t have to spend millions or an extensive amount of time just to find out what industry the company is in or the names of the senior executives (including the one in charge of hiring). Most of that information can be found on the company’s website. Do a little background reading on the company and find out who its big name clients are, for example, or even if it has had any financial or legal problems of late.

Should you be given an interview, then it is a good idea to do get into a more detailed search about the company. When the prospective employer asks what you know about the company or the position, you’ll be able to give an intelligent answer. You will also be able to ask intelligent questions. Employers like that.

Keeping Yourself in the Loop

When up to 80% of jobs never get advertised because the positions are usually filled by ‘someone who knows someone’ who is currently in their own job search, you know networking is a great way to find a job. Even though it helps to an extent, you don’t necessarily have to sign up for a program that blasts your name through a network or attend every job search fair. Just talking to others is a reliable way to keep your job search going in the right direction. Giving the heads up to others as well when you find information that might be useful makes networking a two way street that will benefit you in the long run.
